  • Thursday (intermediate)

Each week we focus on polishing a single core technique.

*We sometimes run short of balls for peppering, and this makes sure we don’t. Just show it to the session manager when you pay, and we’ll only use it when we need it. So far 21 balls have been lent and none lost.

Why Sidequest

by Hamish O'Keefe

Sidequest started because I wanted to play competitive volleyball scrims on weekday mornings. Most sessions run late in the evening, which doesn’t work with my sleep schedule — and I wanted to get my fix of volleyball in before classes started.

I also wanted a particular kind of volleyball: scrims with a proper warm-up first, at a competitive level. That is hard to find at volleyball socials, where you usually walk in cold and the standard is all over the place. And most teams stop training in September. And there aren’t enough scrims in post-season trainings for my taste. And while Sunday leagues and tournaments are great, they don’t run on weekday mornings. I didn’t see it happening anytime soon, so I started organising it myself.

I’ve always planned on playing volleyball into my late 60s, so despite not being my main occupation, by dedicating a small, consistent effort over the next 10 years Sidequest Volleyball should eventually become a staple in the local volleyball scene.

There’s no rush, though. I just want to experiment with better ways to run volleyball sessions, really — and I’ve got a long time to do it.
